KMFilms targets smaller indie titles

BUENOS AIRES -- Javier Krause is fast building an international sales catalog, taking on films in Argentina and elsewhere with breakout potential but off the mainstream radar. He launched KMFilms in April as a boutique label in Buenos Aires, quickly amassing a 30-feature catalog, with four additions in the last week. This is a sign of the indie film growth in Argentina. A boom in film schools has made Argentina the busiest production industry in Latin America, with 100 features a year. There are about 15,000 film students -- more than in Europe -- looking for their shot, and this is spawning new voices out of Cordoba, Mendoza and the main output hub in Buenos Aires. Many titles come from indie shops in Argentina with limited access to the 850-screen exhibition circuit 85% dominated by Hollywood. "There are a lot of good films that never make it to theatrical, and we want to develop this market," he said. "De Caravana" (Clubbing), a freshman fish-out-of-water comedy by Rosendo Ruiz, pulled 20,000 admissions in Cordoba, where it was filmed, with three copies. Buyers have started calling, even for remake rights, Krause said. KMFilms is taking eight of his 30 films to the Dec. 2-5 Ventana Sur film market, including Teodoro Ciampagna's "Hipolito," a political drama also out of Cordoba, and Emiliano Romero's "Topos," a tragicomedy played out in the world of resistance fighters. Helena Bonham Carter: 'Dark Shadows' Will Be 'Impossible To Sell'

Helena Bonham Carter might have loved her role in Tim Burton's upcoming film "Dark Shadows," but she was incredibly frank about the project when MTV News caught up with her before last night's Britannia Awards. Between saying that the movie will be "impossible to sell" to making a hilarious commentary on the original TV show from the '70s and '80s, Bonham Carter gave us an honest taste of what's to come with the film. What she didn't say, though, was that it's a return to vintage Burton. Instead, she clarified that it's a return to his passion projects. "This is a thing he raced home to see when he was about age 10, so it's returning to his childhood roots of what he loved watching," Bonham Carter said of the original "Dark Shadows." "It's actually a really bad, hilariously bad soap opera, and because it's so bad, he felt he had to make a hugely expensive movie." That being said, Bonham Carter admitted that she loves the film as a whole, and had a lot of fun playing her character Dr. Julia Hoffman. But, since "Dark Shadows" wrapped so recently, the Burton regular admitted that she was having a hard time completely separating herself from the role. "I mean, she's an alcoholic psychiatrist, so I hadn't played that before. And she's got a secret. They all have secrets. It's all about people who have secrets," she teased. The difficult part of selling "Dark Shadows" to a mainstream audience will be in figuring out how to categorize it, apparently. To us, the major selling point is the fact it's a Tim Burton movie, but Bonham Carter said studios might not feel the same way. "It's going to be unlike [anything], I think. It's dangerous to say that. But it's very original and it's kind of uncategorizable. It's going to be impossible to sell, frankly, because it's just so ... it's a soap opera, but it's very, very subtle. I don't know. We'll see. It's a ghost story, but then it's an unhappy vampire story, it's a mixture of so many different things and a real ensemble piece. Hopefully it will be funny. I don't know," she said. Akiva Goldsman Inks Overall Deal With HBO, Sets Up Western Drama About Doc Holliday With Ron Howard Attached To Direct

EXCLUSIVE: Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman has signed a two-year exclusive overall deal with HBO. The first project under the pact is an untitled Western drama about Doc Holliday, the famed gambler and gunslinger of the Old West. Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Accepted) will write the script and will executive produce with Goldsman and his producing partner Kerry Foster. Ron Howard is attached to direct the potential pilot. His father, Rance Howard, will serve as co-producer along with his wife Judy Howard. The project is inspired by Mary Doria Russells critically praised novel Doc, which was published in May. Doc Holliday is often portrayed as an ailing sidekick (he died from tuberculosis at age 36), best known for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and his involvement in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (Val Kilmer portrayed him in the movie Tombstone). But the HBO project aims to put Holliday front and center as the series protagonist, an educated Southern gentleman and dentist by trade, thrust into the cruel and violent world of the Old West in order to salvage his ailing health. The series will feature the never-before-explored love triangle between Holliday, his prostitute wife, Kate Elder and best friend, Wyatt Earp — all set against the lawlessness and desperation of a rapidly changing society. Goldsman mentioned the idea to frequent collaborator Ron Howard while the two were discussing their latest project, The Dark Tower. Howard is set to direct and Goldsman is writing the adaptation of the Stephen King’s book series, which is looking for a home as a feature trilogy and an accompanying limited TV series after being put in turnaround by NBCUniversal. Several years ago, writer-producer Goldsman was looking to branch out into directing. His friend J.J. Abrams offered him to write and direct an episode from the first season of Fringe, which Abrams co-created and is executive producing. Goldsman did it and then stuck around as an “eccentric uncle”, as he put it. He continues to serve as a consulting producer on the critically praised but low-rated drama, occasionally writing, co-writing or directing episodes. “Nobody watches us but I’m tremendously proud of the show and the work were done,” Goldman said of Fringe. “We managed to follow that new trend of serialized storytelling. And HBO is the best in the business for that.” Goldsman had been looking to expand into TV in a bigger way. “I think that the line between film and television is getting blurrier and blurrier, and I think thats pretty exciting creatively,” he said. Because of HBO’s approach to storytelling, it was the place he wanted to do it. Especially because of his long history with fantasy and sci-fi and the way HBO treats genre series with 2 shows he likes, True Blood and especially Game Of Thrones (“I worship at the alter of that show,” Goldsman said.) “What I love about HBO is that storytelling seems to be king and that genre seems to be almost irrelevant,” he said. Also appealing to Goldsman in signing an overall deal with HBO was the opportunity to be a writing, non-writing producer and director. He does plan to create his first series under the pact, most likely in his favorite mold of character-driven drama within a genre framework. As for Dark Tower, “we’re still pushing the boulder uphill,” Goldsman said but is optimistic that the ambitious project will find a home “very soon.” The writing duo of Cooper and Collage, repped by WME, have worked on over two dozen scripts for major studios, including NY Minute, Wrong Turn, Ransom and Tower Heist. They most recently wrote Exodus for the Chernin Co., Marco Polo for Frances Lawrence and Moby Dick for Timor Bekmambetov at Universal. Goldsman and Howard are with CAA, which also co-repped Russell’s book with Dystel & Goderich Literary Management.

As usual, we’ve circled five moments worth seeking out. Collect them all. 5. Your new Laurence Olivier, Dr. Drew Pinsky Remember when G. Gordon Liddy costarred in the summer camp classic Camp Cucamonga? This casting isn’t quite as senseless, but non-actor Drew Pinsky plays the twins’ dad. He’s about as natural as you can imagine. It’s this undeniable talent that led him into advanced acting projects like Celebrity Rehab. Remember when he pretended to care about Jeff Conaway? That was five-star commitment. 4. The strange allure and nothingness of Mary-Kate and Ashley You may say the Olsen twins are famous because their fans also want to be completely unextraordinary and get paid millions for it, but I’d argue there’s an X-factor at play here. Think about it. How do the Olsens manage to look like newborn gibbons and 49-year-old Taylor Dayne at the same time? How is that possible? Does that mean they’re malnourished or over-nourished? I really don’t know. But I do understand that Mary-Kate and Ashley lend an unassuming fun to their archetypal roles here. When ultra-organized Ashley sputters, “Relax?! My relaxing tips are in my day planner!”, you kind of smile. Did I mention that most of Ashley’s dialogue sounds like discarded Bob Saget lines from Full House? Now you know. Group hug. 3. TV’s favorite sidekick picks up the movies’ most notorious accent. It’s impossible not to root for Andy Richter’s success, but his turn in NY Minute as an Asian-accented assassin is nothing but a 2004 update of Mickey Rooney’s eye-popping work in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s racist, ridiculous, and it pulls you out of the very real drama that threatens the Olsen twins’ lives. In other words, it’s a necessary addition to the movie. 2. Mary-Kate and Ashley fail at “sexy” to the tune of the most annoying song of the decade. I’ve never watched Supernatural, but I might be persuaded after watching star Jared Padalecki turn up here as a shirtless sex object who doesn’t mind that the twins have broken into his apartment. In fact, he doesn’t even mind their scary unsexiness. As he walks in on the towel-adorned ladies, we’re suddenly thrown into a slow-motion, hair-tossing photo shoot where Mary-Kate and Ashley make sexy eyes to the tune of No Doubt’s “Hey Baby.” Let’s recap that sentence: Mary-Kate and Ashley give us their “O” faces while the worst goddamn song of the 2000s plays. Legendary. Gwen Stefani, you’re still not forgiven! 1. Why, Eugene Levy? Why? Second City veteran and Christopher Guest muse Eugene Levy plays the dastardly Maxamillion Lomax, a truancy officer who follows and pretty much lusts after Mary-Kate the whole movie. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O Debuts Opera on Oct. 12

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O will debut her "psycho opera" Stop the Virgens as part of the Creators Project in Brooklyn this month. The project will debut Oct. 12 at St. Ann's Warehouse in the neighborhood known as DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and combines the worlds of music, film and theater. There will be eight performances of the project, which was co-created by design director KK Barrett and directed by novelist-filmmaker Adam Rapp. Stop the Virgens features nine new songs written by the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack composer with musical direction from her bandmate Nick Zinner and producer Sam Spiegel. Lili Taylor, Beastie Boys producer Money Mark, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of the Raconteurs and Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase are among the collaborators on the opera. "The process of creating the production has been about tuning into the music and letting it's cinematic qualities conjure all the facets of the live experience," says Karen O. "I brought the performing arts to the music because it felt like a natural pairing. It's always felt as though the music was calling out to be much more than just a record." The Creators Project is a cultural and arts festival sponsored by Vice magazine and Intel. On Saturday, Oct. 15, the event will feature live music from bands like Florence and the Machine, Atlas Sound and Four Tet.
