Can someone explain the iTunes Festival standby process to me?

I was unsuccessful in winning tickets to any gigs, but I heard that if
you go there early and queue up in a 'standby line' you get let in
anyway. Can someone explain this to me?

Also, does it cost any money, what time would I have to get down there
for and is this available for all gigs?
